De uma maneira um pouco diferente do que geralmente acontece, a música “Total Control” começou a ser composta DEPOIS de iniciada a produção do vídeo… Na verdade, inicialmente o projeto era criar um clipe para a música “RobotFunk”, o que explica o nome do carro que disputa os momentos finais da corrida com o DeLorean “GOLDEN SHOWER”. No entanto, à medida em que a animação tomava forma, percebíamos que o andamento da “Robotfunk” não possuía um “pique” condizente com o ritmo da corrida que tínhamos em mente. Portanto, diante da escolha entre a idéia e a música… decidimos continuar com a primeira. Por mais absurdo que parecesse começarmos uma música do zero àquela altura do processo, foi a melhor coisa que poderíamos ter feito. Desenterramos algumas idéias, linhas melódicas e sonoridades que tínhamos guardado para algum projeto que nunca saiu do papel, e juntamos tudo em torno de uma referência que sempre quisemos citar, e que não poderia ser mais apropriada para nosso assunto: o tema do seriado de TV “Super Máquina”.

A nova música começou então a fluir de uma maneira surpreendente para nós, acostumados que éramos a passar meses a fio lapidando uma música nova, num trabalho incansável de edição. É claro que o fato do prazo final para a conclusão do vídeo estar perigosamente próximo nos ajudou a simplificar o processo de composição… Surpreendente também foi como essa “produção em paralelo”, antes de atrapalhar, acabou ajudando na execução do vídeo, graças a uma flexibilidade que não teríamos se estivésemos trabalhando sobre uma base musical definida. Assim, se um trecho da música não estivesse se resolvendo bem no vídeo, bastava mudá-lo, e vice-versa.

Foi assim então que no final o GOLDEN SHOWER não apenas tinha um novo videoclipe, mas também uma música novinha em folha. Decidimos chamá-la de “Total Control” em homenagem a um dos brinquedos que serviram de referência para o conceito do vídeo: o TCR (lançado aqui no Brasil pela saudosa Troll), cujo nome era uma sigla para “Total Control Racing”. Apesar das atribulações, modéstia à parte nos saímos com uma bela música, algo como Afrika Bambaataa pilotando a Super Máquina pela Electric Avenue, ou algo assim… e que acreditamos se sustentar por si só perfeitamente.


Seguindo a tradição GOLDEN SHOWER, “Total Control” foi toda feita em um Macintosh, com os sons gerados pelo software Reason e sequenciados no Logic Audio, e a parte “vocal” produzida através do programa VocalWriter. Durante a composição contamos com a valiosa colaboração de nosso amigo Mario Sader.

 

In a slight departure from the usual way these things are made, the “Total Control” song started AFTER the video production began… In fact, the whole project started as a music video for the “RobotFunk” song, which explains the name of the car that struggles with the DeLorean “GOLDEN SHOWER” during the final moments of the race. However, as the animation took shape, we realized that the beat of “Robotfunk” wasn't quite relating to the speed of the race we had in mind. Therefore, confronted with the choice between the song and the idea… we decided to stick with the latter. As absurd as it might seem to start a new song from scratch at that point in time, it was the best thing we could have done. We brought out some ideas, sounds and melodic lines we had stored for some project that never was, and gathered it all together around a reference we always wanted to work with, one that couldn't be more appropriate for our subject: the opening tune of the "Knight Rider” TV show.

The new song then began to grow surprisingly fast for us, since we've been used to spend months tweaking a new song, cutting and editing incessantly. Of course, the dangerously approaching deadline also helped us streamline our songwriting process… Surprising too was how working on the song and video at the same time actually helped the latter, rather than messing with its production, thanks to a flexibility we wouldn't have if we were working with a fixed soundtrack. Consequently, if a portion of the song wasn't working with the video, we could simply change it, the same thing happening the other way round.

That's how in the end GOLDEN SHOWER not only had a new music video, but also a brand-new song to boot. We named it “Total Control” after one of the electric car toys that served as reference for the concept of the video, the TCR, which stands for “Total Control Racing”. Despite all the trouble, we came up with a pretty nice song, one that sounds like Afrika Bambaataa driving KITT from “Knight Rider” down the Electric Avenue… or something like that. And which we believe has a value of its own.


According to the GOLDEN SHOWER tradition, “Total Control” was made entirely on a Macintosh, with all sounds generated by the software Reason and by the virtual synths ES-1, EXS24, Pro-52 and LM-4, and sequenced on Logic Audio, with the “vocal” part made with the VocalWriter software. During the composition we had the invaluable help of our friend Mario Sader.
